Alternative Field

There are presently no open calls for submissions.

Welcome to Alternative Field's submission page. We look forward to reading your work.

HOW TO SUBMIT

  • Please include a 100-word (or less) bio, and don't forget to include any websites. Include your name as you would like it to appear in the publication.
  • Please include your poems together in one document.
  • Use the Add File button to find the poem(s) on your computer. Select the file and click the Open button. Your file will appear in the "file" field. Please only submit .DOC, .DOCX, .RTF, or .TXT files.
  • Click Submit, and you're done! You'll receive a general email confirming that we received your submission. You can check the status of your submission by logging into your Submittable account.

We are a small non-profit organization, so the submission fee helps ensure the submission process is easier, better, efficient, and sustainable for everyone. The fee also supports our efforts to pay writers for their work, and we hope to include as many submissions as we can. If, for any reason at all, the paywall makes it difficult for you to submit your work, please do send your submissions to submissions@alternativefield.com no later than the due date for that particular call. Please include the name of the call in the subject line. We understand that a submission fee can be problematic for so many reasons, which is why you don't need to explain your reasoning. Just send your work over, following as close to the guidelines as possible, and we'll be happy to receive it.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • To make sure you receive our responses, set your spam filter to allow emails from submissions@alternativefield.com.
  • Our calls are open to everyone. We prioritize poetry by Black and Indigenous writers and writers of color, unpublished writers, women, femme, womxn-identified, transgender, and gender non-conforming writers, writers with visible and invisible disabilities, and writers who are caretakers. If none of these descriptors reflects who you are, and you are curious about this, please email us at info@alternativefield.com, and we'll be happy to discuss this with you and tell you a little bit about our story. We do discussions well.
  • Submitting your poems grants us the right to publish your work. You will retain the rights should your poem be published. All poems published by Alternative Field and our imprint Alternative Field Notes are not for resale or distribution unless authorized by the writer of the poetry. We will not own your work.
  • We are open to simultaneous submissions, but let us know if your work has been submitted elsewhere and you need us to withdraw your work.
  • Writers of accepted poems will receive a minimum stipend of $30 per poem. The stipend will go up depending on the number of paid submissions we receive. We aim to increase this minimum amount soon with the implementation of new publications and programming.
  • Alternative Field, and it’s imprint Alternative Field Notes, is committed to disengaging from writing that perpetuates violence in its many forms, and as a publisher, this means not accepting work or writers of work that support racist, xenophobic, classist, sexist, misogynistic,  ageist, ableist, homophobic, and/or transphobic ideologies.

If you have trouble using this site, click the "Help" link at the bottom of this page or email support@submittable.com. Alternatively, you can email us at submissions@alternativefield.com if you have trouble with any part of this process.

Thank you for submitting to Alternative Field.
